Claire de Monteil’s performance is breathtaking. The young soprano’s voice—renowned since she stepped in at the last minute to replace the announced soprano in Medea at La Scala in Milan—remains perfectly even across her wide vocal range. A divine musical line, the roundness and beauty of her tone, and her gentle embodiment of the text all combine to make her performance unforgettable. Conceived as a diptych, another performance of Verdi’s complete Messa da Requiem will complement this evening of rare flavor and overwhelming intensity.
